The Shadow Hawk is quite a versatile and speedy medium mech. An old Star League Design it has never fallen out of favour due to its significant firepower for its weight class. Either used to command light mech companies or as a spotter for heavier mechs; with its jump jets this mech can be used as a raider or scout.
It was succeeded by the Dragon in the DCMS.

The SHD-5M comes from the factory with Endo-Steel, Double Heat Sinks, and an XL engine, making it a significant upgrade over the SHD-2D, albeit at a higher purchase price. The SHD-5M is a highly versatile skirmisher.

Speculation
Like the Centurion the Shadow Hawk is quite versatile, if not more. It should make an excellent mech for any pilot and has proven to be quite popular throughout the Innersphere despite being nearly 500 years old. A good hit and run mech effective at any range.
